From the Boxing Ring to a Prison Cell: Dewey Bozella's Fight for Freedom
Posted: December 14, 2009 4:55 pm
A feature story in the New York Daily News this weekend digs into Bozella’s case -- and his promising boxing career stopped short by a wrongful conviction. Bozella was invited to Saturday’s fight by boxer Paulie Malignaggi, who told the Daily News he was moved by Bozella’s story.
"When you're innocent, you shouldn't even spend a minute in jail, let alone 26 years," Malignaggi told the Daily News.

New York Exoneree to Receive Arthur Ashe Courage Award at ESPYs
Posted: July 12, 2011 3:06 pm
Bozella was initially arrested for the 1977 burglary and murder of a 92-year-old woman shortly after her attack, but the charges were dropped because there was no evidence linking him to the crime. He was rearrested for the crime 6 years later after 2 inmates, who were released from prison for their cooperation, told prosecutors that Bozella committed the murder. Bozella was convicted based solely on the strength of the informants’ testimony.
The Innocence Project accepted Bozella’s case in 2007, before learning that all biological evidence had been destroyed and DNA testing was impossible. The case was refered to WilmerHale law firm in 2008, and a team of lawyers uncovered convincing evidence that Bozella was innocent and that another man likely committed the crime.
Bozella was 18 when he was arrested and 50 when he became a free man in October 2009.

New York Exoneree to Make Boxing Debut
Posted: October 11, 2011 5:41 pm
Bozella was initially arrested for the 1977 burglary and murder of a 92-year-old woman, but the charges were dropped because there was no evidence linking him to the crime. He was rearrested for the crime six years later after two inmates, who were released from prison for their cooperation, told prosecutors that Bozella committed the murder. Even though a fingerprint was found at the crime scene that matched another individual who committed a nearly identical crime around the same time, the state went forward with the prosecution. Based solely on the strength of the informants’ testimony, Bozella was convicted.
In prison, Bozella earned a bachelor’s degree from Mercy College and a master’s from the New York Theological Seminary. He also took up boxing, becoming Sing Sing’s light-heavyweight champion.
He was a model prisoner but was denied parole several times because he wouldn’t admit that he was guilty of the murder. When he was finally exonerated, Bozella began teaching boxing skills and discipline to young people.
Then came the ESPY Awards this year, where he was honored with the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. The exposure led to an offer to box professionally. And the rest is history.
Bozella hopes to open his own boxing gym in the future.

“My next fight is to work with kids, the Dewey Bozella Foundation, that’s what I’m trying to get started to work with kids to keep them off the streets, to let them know through boxing they can turn their life around,” he said.
