The New York Times Calls on Gov. Cuomo to Pass Wrongful Conviction Reforms

An editorial in today’s New York Times “An Incomplete DNA Deal,” cites the importance of passing legislation, including police lineup reforms and videotaping interrogations, to prevent wrongful convictions. Last week, Gov. Cuomo signed into law a bill that will expand the state’s DNA database. The Innocence Project and other critics of the legislation argued that it didn’t go far enough to protect the innocent. New York State, together with Illinois and Texas, leads the nation in wrongful convictions overturned by DNA testing. However, New York has not done as much as those other states to pass criminal justice reforms.
