Massachusetts' Fight for DNA Access

Massachusetts is one of two states lacking a law that allows inmates the right to post-conviction DNA testing that might prove their innocence. The other is Oklahoma.
Sunday’s edition of The Boston Globe Magazine featured the Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism’s examination of this roadblock facing Massachusetts inmates who claim innocence.
For nearly a decade, a bill that would provide access to DNA testing for inmates has been proposed in every legislative session, but it has yet to pass the House.
A version of the bill recommended by the Boston Bar Association (BBA) is before the Massachusetts legislature right now. While the Senate voted unanimously in its favor, there has been little movement in the House, where it remains.
