Exoneree Herman Atkins Speaks to DNA Scientists

Herman Atkins, who was exonerated through DNA testing in 2000, spoke to employees at Life Technologies, a biotechnology firm in San Diego, on Thursday about the importance of their work in his life. Life Technologies manufactures a DNA kit that is often used for post-conviction DNA testing.
"It renews our spirit to do what we do every day knowing that someone like Herman is on the other side," said Lisa Schade, director of marketing for the company.
Atkins could not have proven his innocence without DNA technology. He was wrongfully convicted of a Lake Elsinore, California, rape and spent 12 years in prison before his release. Today, Atkins is pursuing a law degree from Cal Western and hopes to work for the Innocence Project someday, so that he can help free other wrongfully convicted people.
