Connecticut Senate Votes to Repeal Death Penalty

Yesterday, the Connecticut Senate voted to repeal capital punishment, reports CNN. The bill now heads to the House of Representatives, where it is expected to pass. State lawmakers attempted to pass a repeal bill in 2009, but were ultimately blocked by the then-Governor, Jodi Rell. Current Governor Dannel Malloy has vowed to sign the bill into law if it reaches his desk.
Increased awareness of wrongful convictions has played a role in the public's perception of capital punishment.
Says Richard Dieter, the executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center, "Mistakes can be made and you may not know about it until science later exposes them."
The proposed law is prospective, meaning that the 11 people currently on Connecticut's death-row would not be affected by its passage.
