A Historic Day and What it Means for Criminal Justice Reform

Today Barack Obama took the oath of office in Washington, D.C., becoming the 44th President of the United States. The new administration has pledged to tackle our nation’s pressing issues head-on, and preventing wrongful convictions should be a priority for the federal government and states nationwide..
One important area for federal attention is standards for forensic sciences. Soon, the National Academy of Sciences is expected to release a report examining the state of forensic science in America. The Innocence Project is hopeful that the report will call for additional research to validate forensic disciplines, clear standards for using various forensic disciplines and nationwide enforcement of those standards. It will take the leadership from Congress and the new Administration to bring badly needed standards to forensic science.
