A Call for a Canadian Case Review Commission

A column in the Montreal Gazette yesterday calls for the establishment of a federal case review board, to ensure that claims of innocence from prisoners are reviewed by a publicly accountable group of experts. The article comes in the wake of several high-profile exonerations in Canada in recent months, including the case of David Milgaard in September.

When they operate at their best, the legal and political systems share a common pursuit: to do what is right. After numerous public inquiries that have cost taxpayers tens of millions of dollars, the just and fair solution to a fundamental problem once again stares us squarely in the face. And still we wait for a government with the courage to act.
